Essence Monsters Not Dropping Essence On Kill

I just encountered an essence in the middle of an abyss spawn area.

Cleared the abyss > corrupted the essence > poped the essence opened > Killed Mobs

1) There was no essence dropped on kill.
2) The weird part is that when i walk around where the essence was there seemed to be invisible objects blocking my path as though the monsters were still there.
