Mark of the Abyssal Lord is bugged and not working properly

As far as I understand it Mark of the Abyssal Lord is supposed to be implicit and not occupy a prefix or suffix specifically until you desecrate (or at least should stay where it was if there was an open slot). I had really buggy behavior with it. I had a fractured suffix and a suffix I wanted to get rid of with it. The plan was to use a Perfect Essence to fill in a specific suffix I wanted.

I used the omen that makes a Perfect/Corrupted essence only remove a suffix, and that worked, but the Mark of the Abyssal Lord randomly assigned itself to a prefix slot after removing the suffix even though there were still open slots available.

Then, with 1 open suffix and 1 open prefix, I tried to turn the mark into a desecration, and it wouldn't allow me to do what I wanted to do. I was trying to force Ulaman and Suffix with the abyss omens, and I just kept getting the error "This combination of Omens is not valid" even though there was no reason why I shouldn't be able to do it. The game was just bugged and thinking what I wanted to do was impossible because the Mark had assigned itself to a prefix slot.

I also tried using the Ulaman and Suffix omens individually on their own, and neither would work. This screwed over my entire plan and ended up with me throwing away like 5 divs on a failed craft.

Either this thing is bugged or the description is very wrong / missing a ton of important details about how it actually functions.

So, what determines which position the Mark gets slotted into then? The game says nothing at all about this, and it's pretty confusing. I have no idea why it would take from a suffix and then put the Mark into a prefix.
Just started a conversation about it on Reddit to see if anyone else has any insight: https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExile2/comments/1nljuqe/mark_of_the_abyssal_lord_question_about/
Possibilities for what happens when there are both open Suffixes and Prefixes:

1. It's pure RNG and the game randomly selects whether the Mark goes into a Prefix or Suffix slot.

2. The game looks at the number of available slots on the Prefixes and Suffixes and tries to balance them out, always adding to the one that had the most number of open slots.

3. The Mark has a bias for always selecting a Prefix slot if there is one available regardless of whether or not there are also open Suffixes.

4. There is some other weighting or bias that is unexplained that I haven't thought of.

5. It's just bugged and not working properly.

I have no idea which of the above things is true, but it would be good to know. Otherwise, I can't reliably use this item, as it is not deterministic enough.

BTW, it would be good to actually tell players this counts as a Perfect/Corrupted essence. A lot of less knowledgeable players probably don't even know this, because it isn't explained anywhere. You'd have to try it yourself or have watched YouTube videos about crafting to know this.
What type of item was it? Amulet? Ring?
