Tactician - Immobilization Grenades - Coolguys Flip over Explosions (Build of the Week)
Hi Exiles,
This is my Build for PoE 0.3 and my submission for Build of the Week. Edit: POB as it stands right now. https://maxroll.gg/poe2/pob/o51es0c6 Recent change: we are using Cluster grenade to generate endurance charges, and have put on combat frenzy & charge regulation for more skill speed & more defences benefits at the cost of 30 spirt & herald of flame, which i don't think was doing too much. To start here is a link of gameplay, so you can see the build the post is all about in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGzYLDRCAJQ Here is a verbal overview of me discussing some key parts of the build youtube.com/watch?v=uAUqTo0wCq8&feature=youtu.be What does this build do?
Spoiler
At its core, this is Fire to Cold damage conversion ranged grenade build that creates explosions that generate tons of the immobilisation status effect in both Pin & Freeze.
- This Build primarily uses 3 main skills 1. Explosive Grenades (Fire Damage) 2. Mortar Cannon - Gas Grenades (Fire Damage when detonated) 3. Black Powder Blitz (A travel skill that replaces our dodge roll & detonates grenades around us) We utilise the gloves Blueflame bracers to convert all of our fire damage to cold damage, meaning all the fire damage can now freeze & We utilise the boots Shankgonne to forego any concerns around grenade detonation time for smooth grenade gameplay where we don't have to wait for the boom Because we play Tactician, all of our projectile damage (Grenades are projectiles <3) pins & we get 40% more immobilisation for both status effects. This allows us to double dip on making mobs stand still & do nothing from both Pin & Freeze The inspiration & why of the build
Spoiler
As the title implies, the build is all about grenades that immobilise enemies. Having played with Tactician in 0.2, I knew that I loved projectiles pinning enemies. Dying in Poe 2 sucks, so making our dps a defensive layer is great. Enemies do nothing while you do damage on this build & having two sources of this at the same time is Chefs kiss given freeze & pin status's often build at different speeds. The fact that this got buffed to include 40% MORE Immobilisation was just too good to pass up. Pair this with the changes to armour applying to Ele & chaos damage, More changes to the Tactician Ascendancy & the new mechanic Deflection, the addition of the Mortar Cannon, some janky boots that fit in perfectly to what we are already doing, and the classic AOE BOOM style of gameplay and we have something that's a true crowd *Clearer* :).
Positives & Negatives of the Build Positives
Spoiler
1. This is a ranged run and gun playstyle, very rarely are you standing still which means you can dodge and react to enemies attacks.
2. The largest defensive layer is linked to dealing damage. We both Freeze and Pin mobs & bosses all the time with no effort 3. The builds entire tool kit is aoe damage while moving forward, meaning you are moving pack to pack often. 4. The build is immune to Stuns. 5. This Build scales both Deflection +50%, & decent Armour (10k+) with it being easy to get armour to mitigate both elemental damage & chaos damage 6. The character is easy to gear, with only two 2 necessary uniques that are very affordable. Our primary source of damage, the crossbow, can be crafted almost entirely deterministically if playing on trade 7. Early game leveling & maps can be done with a generic mortar canon & gas/explosive grenade set up, the defensive layer of just freezing & pinning enemies means even with no real defensive gear you can clear all the way to t15's playing carefully saving currency until you want to swap into the main gear setup. *Note*:If it ever becomes desired I can write up how I leveled with this character before swapping. it was super simple 8. This build has a lot of spirit, and can play around with lots of spirit gems / Spirit support gems due to Tacticians Ascendancy point *A Solid Plan*. Negatives
Spoiler
1. This is a Life Based build, getting to or above 3K life will be difficult on this given we use both gloves & boots with no life & may struggle to get life on our body armour.
2. This build doesn't scale movement speed, we run a pair of boots with no MS 3. This build cannot sprint. You are going to be rocket jumping a lot to move around 4. this build relies on HP regen & hp on kill for recovery, A strong DoT or lots of range hits at once can be quite scary 5. When Bossing, mana recovery can suffer a little if the fight doesn't end immediately. A mana on kill jewel is highly recommended for mana free map clearing 6. Your immobilization status effects may stack at the same time, making it feel like one is being wasted sometimes. What's the playstyle?
Spoiler
For normal map clear
1. We shoot Explosive Grenades 2. We use the Black Powder Blitz Skill to flip over our Grenades 3. The mobs die, get pinned, get frozen, or both 4. Repeat For bossing or tough rares 1. We shoot Explosive grenades 2. We raise two mortar cannons that shoot even more grenades 3. We use Black Powder Blitz to flip around 4. The Boss/rares health will go down while it stands there in a pile of fireworks. Most enemies won't even get a chance to attack. If they break out it won't be long till they are stuck again 5. A cool bonus is if a boss has an animation prior to the start of the fight, we have a good amount of time to stack up a pile of explosives, as our detonation time on grenades happens to be quite long. What Spirit Gems does the build use?
Spoiler
1. Scavenged Plating - We break armour often via the skill point eroding chains for 10x Stacks
2. Hearld of Ice & Herald of Fire for more explosions 3. Shard Scavenger for faster grenade cooldowns 4. Overwhelming presence for easier Freeze buildup 5. Blasphemy with Elemental Weakeness for AoE elemental resistance reduction on enemies. What gear do we care about? Unique Gloves - Blueflame Bracers
Spoiler
https://imgur.com/a/pISf8zc This uniques is how we make our gas grenades & Explosive grenades freeze.
Unique Boots - Shankgonne Covered Sabatons
Spoiler
https://imgur.com/a/nYrTBqo These baddie boots give up any increased movement speed, dodge roll, and Sprinting to give us the Ability Black Powder Blitz. This allows our character to replace dodge roll with a rocket jump that immediately detonates grenades that have yet to explode. With a good amount of cooldown recovery rate, its what allows our build to go fast, and flip high into the sky. Also happens to give deflection, which is a handy bonus
Offensive gear?
Spoiler
https://imgur.com/a/iFqYXzvAlmost all of the damage on the build that isn't from the tree comes from our crossbow. Thankfully, our Crossbow can be crafted deterministically thanks to the new crafting options presented in 0.3 with essences & Desecreation crafting. Credit to Lolcohol for the method and please give his video a watch to see how easy this is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2WsvaNgIYk
Defensive gear?
Spoiler
https://imgur.com/a/WQ4K8GHWe want a high base armour Body Armour/Chestpiece. The reason? We primarily scale armour through multiple sources of increased armour from equipped body armour.
From the passive tree we pick up Sturdy Metal, and then on both the new jewel Heart of the Well & a rare amulet, we can pick up two additional sources of increased armour from equipped body armour. https://imgur.com/a/4UXtoUC https://imgur.com/a/rJuuUNd This means we can scale up to an additional 190% Additional armour from our body armour. This allows the build to get a decent armour amount despite having our boot & glove slots locked up with the required uniques. Given that we reach decent armour values, we are then able to use the scaled armour for passable physical damage mitigation and pick up sources of elemental & chaos damage to armour mitigation as well. Given the Tactician Ascendancy and Shankgonne boots provide Deflection rating for armour, we are then able to build a good amount of Deflection on top for free. Besides this, this is a life based character that wants the standard 75% fire, cold, & lightning resists & as much chaos resist as possible, ideally 75% as well. Life & Resists on gear is good, and a high armour helmet is nice. https://imgur.com/a/1j6v6Sa If you want to play around with curses, intelligence can be hard to manage, so sources of all attributes or + intelligence on gear can really help to allow this. If this is out of reach, I imagine a companion may be a solid Spirit gem to use instead of the curse gem with elemental weakness Notable Parts of the Skill tree / What are we pathing towards?
Spoiler
Lets start with the exciting, individual skill points on the tree! 1. The skill point Eroding Chains says *Break 50% of Armour on pinning an enemy* If we combine this with Scavenged plating & sources of increased armour break, you will find it is often quite easy to get 10 stacks of Scavenged plating without trying while mapping https://imgur.com/a/fDMlkEn 2. The skill point Sturdy Metal is a major way we scale our armour and main defensive layer. https://imgur.com/a/I477JUX 3. Glancing blows gives us lucky deflection at the cost of unlucky evade. We don't scale evasion, meaning there is no downside. https://imgur.com/a/7vcrvX6 4. Unwavering Stance gives us Immune to light Stuns at the cost of cannot dodge roll or sprint. We already can't do these things, meaning no downsides. https://imgur.com/a/IPAcuQW 5. Artillery Strike gives us 2x Ballista totems with no downside. very nice From here we just want as many sources of cooldown recovery, Armour, Grenade Damage/grenade cooldown, Elemental damage, Immobilisation build up/damage, & aoe effect & aoe damage as possible. Here is a look at the general tree I have at level 90 https://imgur.com/a/x133ikr For the Ascendancy Points I pick in this order 1. Suppressing Fire, 2. Right Where We Want Them, 3. A Solid Plan, and 4. Polish That Gear https://imgur.com/a/e3mf3nB What does Gameplay look like?
Spoiler
Here's a video or 2 of gameplay, I probably posted the same videos at the top of this forum post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGzYLDRCAJQ
Thanks for taking the time to have a look and please ask any questions or leave comments if you have any thoughts! I do work the standard 9 - 5 outside of gaming and take care of one of my parents in my off time, so I might not always be around, but yeah! I will quickly say that while I have made builds before, I have never tried sharing any with the community. I tried my best here, but I am sure to have missed things and just want to let people it's expected and I am sorry! I guess to finish up all I have to say is: cool guys don't look at explosions, they flip over them. Enjoy!
