Here I thought it was just clever use of thematic game design. Like giving peeps a chance to learn on their own to stash your loot away to process it in bulk later, instead of on every trip to base.
Just like those special mechanics in some areas in the Interludes where it can be some special loot or something, but you also get swarmed/overrun and gotta understand that if you let yourself die and don't protect your life first and foremost then you will lose that loot before you even knew what was happening.
