Essence of the Abyss crafting

How does this actually work? I just tried using this and it bricked my item. It says it removes an affix and adds "Mark of the Abyssal Lord" which says the next desecration will be of a higher tier than the removed affix. I ended up removing a T2 affix for a T1 Mark of the Abyssal Lord. When I revealed it I got several T5-7 options... What in the hell is the point of this essence?

What is the point of it then? is it honestly just a convoluted chaos orb that guarantees worse results? Like why is it a thing?
