Is Evasion Rating Better than Armor for Merc Tactician?
So I'm at Level 60 and I'm trying to get more defense on my Merc Tactician. I think I made a mistake going for Armor vs Evasion Rating. Currently I have 5348 armor, 75% Physical damage reduction, 3360 elemental damage reduction and 1067 life,. I'm also using Iron Reflexes to stack more armor but I'm still very squishy. I'm wondering if I should switch my build from armor to evasion rating or what I should focus on at this point.

I have not gotten too far on my merc myself, think I hit 70 recently, but overall its usually more helpfull to go for two kinds of defensive layers at least due to dimishing returns and the more safety the better in most cases.
Lets say you go for armour and evasion, you might end up with 50% reduction from armour instead with a few armour/evasion-nodes taken, and like 20-30% evasion chance with the same setup/little effort. If you invest a bit you can probably get higher in both. Sure you take more damage when you get hit, but there is a chance to evade most as well, do remember that abilities/spells is not dodged naturally if you dont have the talent for it, and if the talent is taken, your evasion takes a huge penalty, so its not the best for us. Deflect is a layer you could stack up on that as well that can reduce damage taken by like 40% as default, and scales from evasion kinda. There is also talents like per 1 armour on gloves, get 1 evasion, so that means you can get beefy armour gloves and still get evasion rating. You could also take talents that does blind on enemy hit etc to ease out even more. If you have spirit to spare you could try grab a companion that can act as a decoy, they might not do much damage or are super useful, had one while leveling my gemlinare now and it more often than not took the attention of many charging mobs. If you dont go for energy shield, Life is extremly important to try and grab on most gear pieces if you can, along with capping resistance. seeing that you are level 60, I guess you have some gaps in it still, that usually sort itself out later on in maps, and once you sit with like 60-75% resistance in the 3 elements life will become easier. Charms and runes are a good and cheap way to sort it out temporary, like chaos charm, since chaos res is harder to get. If you are using shields, thats another great layer, but not suitable for all builds ofc. Last edited by catstyle#1245 on Sep 4, 2025, 6:46:39 AM

If you use asceendency for 20% deflection from armor and wander into ranger part of skill tree, i would go for evasion/armor mix and reach 100% deflection.
