any tips or tricks for controlling aoe targeting abilities on console??

when you play something that is an aoe target you have so little control over where it goes. on pc you literally just click where you want it but on console you can't really do that with the nature of the controls. first time I really ran into this was with hammer of the gods back in the first patch of open beta. I would stun a boss and then use it or prefire it on an essence and then open it, and it was so easy for the auto targeting of the ability to just straight up miss the boss. this league I'm playing grenades, which I also played in the first league, and its not a problem when you're just blasting maps, but when you are trying to boss, sometimes you shoot the grenades right at the bosses feet, which is what you would want, and often times you just shoot them completely passed the boss which makes the gameplay just so bad. I tried less proj speed and the new adhesive support and neither really help. they both help with the rolling once the land, but they don't help with the air time of you actually shooting them close or far away from you. any console people have any tips or trips for controlling aoe abilities on console?

Some abilities you can adjust the skill option to cast on yourself. Kinda helps but mainly just use your right joystick. if you look up the term 'claw hand ps5' on google, youll see how i play. helps me with a lot of targeting
claw feels so weird to me, I've tried it with fps games and I hate it. I found the cast on self right after I posted this and I think I'll just have to toggle that on and off for bosses. also I feel like aiming with the stick doesn't always work either. I know there are setting for that too, the targeting mode settings but I don't know what is the best. sometimes I will be holding and facing a certain direction and my character will turn around and fire at a single enemy instead of the whole pack I and directing/aiming at. I do think the cast on self will be a big help though.
I've seen two-activation targeting, before.

Ex: Left stick move, right stick alternative facing, as it is now.

Activating AOE by pressing the button locks the facing and right stick is now controlling a placement marker. Pressing the AOE button locks the target position and the spell is cast. Left stick movement control is unaffected during the whole process.

BUT... It's VERY clunky for spammable spells and that's probably why it's not already in our control scheme.
I think I know what you're talking about and tried it back in the first league, but you can't really do it fast. I would use it sometimes when I would have stun a boss, but even that sometimes the boss would be back up by the time hammer of the gods would go off, and I would use it for essences before I would open them, but these are the only times I could see that being even remotely usable. I could imagine trying to do something like that whiles mapping, or even in a boss fight while they are moving.
Cast on self is a game changer.
I have two binds of Lightning Rods, 1 normal for mapping etc. and 1 cast on self for bosses.
No need to toggle back and forth if you have an available skill slot.
Works great.
