Is it just me or is chaos damage hitting life AND ES now?

With the lich ascendancy your life can not move while you have ES.

This is true even at the well, clicking on it will not refill your life with this ascendancy.

Before the patch, this also made you immune to chaos damage, poison, and bleeding because your life could not be hit and all of those bypass ES, resulting in no damage.

HOWEVER now, with chaos damage, it appears to be hitting not only through my ES to hit life (which contradicts the lich ascendancy since this last patch) but it's ALSO hitting my ES.

I tested this with the exploding purple things, it hits my life AND my ES. I don't know if this is split damage or if it's doing double (once to life, once to ES) but it seems broken. i have 75% chaos resistance so it only hits me for about a 15%-20% of both.

Is this intentional to not only bypass ES but also bypass the lich ascendancy and hit both life AND ES?

That's like 2 completely different mechanics it has now. Is it now doing double damage to people with ES and Life? (hitting life once and ES once)

I don't get it.

Update:

I see now that chaos just says it does double damage to energy shield but that still doesn't explain why it's hitting my life through the lich ascendancy when it's not taking all my ES.
