Eye of Winter Change Severely Limits Creativity and Frost Spell Diversity

The recent changes to Eye of Winter have fundamentally reduced its viability and appeal for Cold Sorceress builds, diminishing a skill that was previously both effective and visually impressive.

Technical Downsides

Randomized hit chance: Eye of Winter has always relied on random projectile paths, making consistent single-target and area damage somewhat unreliable compared to other options. The key issue now is that this randomness, which was previously offset by the ability to cast many projectiles rapidly, is no longer viable due to the 15-second cooldown. This cooldown severely limits the number of projectiles that can be cast, putting the spell in an extremely weak position.

Single-hit limitation: Projectiles from Eye of Winter only hit once, which inherently restricts its damage potential. Effects like Fork and Chain, which become powerful through a high number of projectiles hitting multiple targets, are rendered almost useless with the cooldown. Since these effects rely on quantity for their strength, the cooldown effectively negates their impact, depriving the skill of much of its former creativity and effectiveness.

The new 15-second cooldown has made the skill impractical for any gameplay; it is no longer suitable for repeated casting or trigger-based mechanics, further eroding its function as a main-damage spell.

Loss of Skill Identity
Eye of Winter was previously favored for its ability to fire many projectiles and interact with mechanics like Fork and Chain, leading to dynamic, enjoyable gameplay that was also visually satisfying.

The removal of these synergies has stripped the skill of its iconic status among Cold Sorceress options; the latest demonstration video starkly illustrates its ineffectiveness under current mechanics.

Cold Snap: Has also been heavily nerfed, losing much of its appeal and effectiveness for crowd control or burst damage.

Frostbolt: Remains available but is boring, slow, and lacking both impact and utility—the removal of the chilled ground effect makes it even less attractive; it's rarely used for damage, as superior options exist.

Spark: Currently the only enjoyable spell left for this purpose, with others underwhelming due to their mechanical limitations and lack of synergy.


Comet now deals significantly more damage than Eye of Winter and offers much better area coverage. Importantly, Comet can still be cast repeatedly, giving it clear superiority for both map clearing and boss fights.

The update missed an opportunity to enhance build diversity by giving Comet a meaningful cooldown, instead choosing to restrict Eye of Winter—this has inadvertently removed several build options that relied on Eye of Winter’s prior strengths.

Impact on Player Experience
Many players have invested considerable time optimizing Eye of Winter builds for its fun and unique playstyle. The lack of alternative exciting spells for Cold Sorceress amplifies the disappointment.

Please GGG, consider removing the CD and bring back Eye of Winter how it was supposed to be. If you want a real cooldown, use Comet, instead of Eye of Winter.

For me, an elemental magic is lost its creativity at all. About half of the spells was turned into infusion-generator, other spells became ultimates, which can be used only at third monday, once per month, while only few spells left for common use.... and you are still supposed to use all the infusion-generators, despite of your "build". Even that ice bomb is main source of elemental weakness. A moment - universal weakness, which means that your fire build should cast it aswell.

Elemental magic became bloated and faceless.

thank you for this write up.

I was planning to league start eye of winter self cast this patch, especially after the changes to flame wall, and the Ricochet III description. EoW looked so exciting as a primary skill for a few days there.

please GGG revert this change. I was going to comply with your 3 button mandate with EoW+Flame Wall+Orb of Storms
