What's a solid build to play for smooth campaign leveling?

My wife has had it with the Ranger she rolled and is looking for something she can play and stay alive throughout the campaign. Any suggestions?

Anything works. Campaign is boringly easy now.

I've been having some success with unearth, though I'm only halfway through act 2 so far, as a rather casual player, heh. I had skelly snipers and recently swapped to ice mages, and using fire wall and orb of storms to give the skellies and my own basic attack spells a bit more kick. Ember fusillade is great for summoning raging spirits, too. No idea what I'll actually do in endgame, but it's fun in early acts so far.
