CTD before even seeing login screen

Hello all,
not sure what is going on. I can log into PoE1 but when loading PoE2 screen goes black and then closes. I don't see any loading screens or anything. I can confirm I can play other games and I have played PoE 2 before, this is something new in the last month.

I have verified cache and uninstalled the game and reinstalled it with no luck. My Drivers are up to date, not sure what to do.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi,

Are you playing (well, trying to) on Windows or macOS?

Is this when using the Steam client, the standalone client, or the Epic Games Store client?

Windows 11 on Steam.
Cheers
Let's see whether the game client has gotten far enough to generate a log file. If so, it would be very helpful as we will hopefully see exactly what went wrong.

If not... well, even knowing that much could potentially rule out certain issues.

Throw the following into File Explorer's address bar;

%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\steamapps\common\Path of Exile 2\logs

The file is called Client.txt, and Windows should just open it in Notepad without asking.

Could you copy 'n' paste it over to Pastebin and give us a link to it there? The files are often fairly substantial in size - so even if it technically fits into the maximum post size here on the forum, if it spams the same error several dozen times it could make the conversation difficult to follow.

If you copy 'n' paste the above directory and Windows throws an error about not being able to find it... well, no log file = no logs directory. At least then we'll have our answer.

Hi, just helping out Sarno here..

Your Client.txt file does not show poe 2 utilizing your NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti as the primary GPU output device.

The game is either choosing to use or is being directed by Windows to output using your Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 (CPU internal GPU) causing the initial black screen launch then imminent crash.

To fix this issue and some recommendations going forward look at the spoilers below.

NVIDIA Driver

Download & install the NVIDIA driver for your 4060ti directly from NVIDIA.

This is the most recent available driver for your PC (Aug 28, 2025)
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/253162/

Reboot your PC then do the next two spoilers

Windows Graphics

Make sure Windows graphics is set to use the right GPU for the game .exe file

Check here
Settings > System > Display > Graphics

Add the game .exe file
D:/Steam/steamapps/common/Path of Exile 2/PathOfExileSteam.exe

Once added hit Options
Select High performance

This step can and should also be done for poe 1 in the same manner

NVIDIA Control Panel

You can download NCP from Windows Store if it does not come with the driver intaller package.

  • Set your PhysX Processor to your GPU not "Auto"
  • Change the Shader Cache Size to 10GB or 100GB to ensure there is enough storage space for shaders. The default setting sometimes causes stuttering & delays.
