Need help understanding X Golem of Hordes.

I have +2 Golems from Ascendency. +1 from a Passive.

Normally this allows me 4 Golems because the base Max is 1.

The of Hordes seems to give Maximum 3 Golems.

So to my mind there should be Max 6 Golems.
However I unsummon a golem when I go for a 6th giving me a limit of 5 only.
Kinda pointless (for buffs) because the of Hordes does not give any buff just an extra body (using up a socket slot is all it does)

Its completely possible that I'm missing something and I'm hoping someone can illuminate me.

That depends on how you're trying to distribute those 6.
A Golem of Hordes gem does not give you extra golem limits that can be used for other Golem gems.

Looking at your build, it looks like you were using Stone Golem, Lightning Golem, Flame Golem, and Stone Golem of Safeguarding. This took up your limit of 4 golems.
When you add Stone Golem of Hordes to that, because the gem has a higher built-in limit, you can still summon two Stone Golem of Hordes.

An empty socket suggests that you tried adding an Ice Golem. Because it does not have a higher built-in limit, it contends for the same 4 golem slots that your other golems are using.
Thank you. It does indeed work like you said.
I can get 6 if I summon extra Stone Golem of Hordes.
One of the permutations I did not ry.

It was an ice golem. That crit chance would be useful for now. Ahh well. At least I can put this idea to rest.
