Friendly legion during Mercenary Fight

As legion was about to break, I started a mercenary fight.
When the fight started the break happened right after.

All of legion was Friendly to me.

Killing the mercenary made the Legion aggro again.

Unsure if the timing matters or just being in a merc fight before legion breaks/during legion break makes the legion friendly.
