Lost characters and character progress after a multi-year hiatus

I just started playing Path of Exile again after I took a break of several years.

I was quite surprised to see I only had my old witch available for selection, and her progress was reset, with all perk points unallocated, and at a lower level than expected. I remember being further ahead in the story, and my character owns and has equipped higher level gear than possible for the current state of where I'm at. I am also missing some currency items on the stash tabs, I remember quite clearly the process of ordering them and shifting them around.


Unfortunately I don't remember more details, except that I also had a Templar, a Duelist and a Brute.

Perhaps my lost data is unrecoverable, especially since I'm an F2P player (15€+ for a single skin is too much - I still remember when Bethesda got beat up for the golden horse armor). But I'm gonna try for it anyway.

Over the years, there have been several instances where the Passive Skill Tree was altered significantly, affecting the selected passives for characters. Your old characters will have a "free full respec" available to reassign all of their points on the new tree. The game's campaign has changed over the years from having several iterations of a few acts (e.g. Normal, Cruel, Merciless) to now having 10 acts, depending on how long you have been gone. The Atlas (maps) has been redesigned several times. Many item base changes have also occurred.

Be sure to select "[Show All]" from the Filter Characters drop-down list on the character selection screen, so that your characters from all leagues are being displayed. Characters from some specific short-term events were sometimes 'voided' upon completion of the event (you would have been warned of that before starting them, if applicable).


If you are actually missing characters or many items, is it possible that you may have played on both Steam and the PC Standalone client? If you happened to play on both, they would likely have been separate accounts with their own characters and mtx unless you had asked for them to be merged. Did you last play more recently than 2013?

Thank you for replying. The respec and item change makes sense and explains things. I went ahead and did it now.

As I was able to see my Witch character, I can verify that it is my old account which I used previously, and not a new Steam account I could have created accidentally. I haven't used this nickname which I used for this account in ages anyway.

I played around the time the mining/delving thing got released, and I think I only got as far as the start of act 6. But with my Witch, I was stranded in the beginning of Act 2. I might've only progressed that far with the other missing characters.

Looks like GGG is not interested in looking into this matter. I suppose it's my fault for not spending a thousand dollars on MTX. ;P
