Im confused what is the name of the new league?

Isnt it Secrets of the Atlas?

Im trying to get a private league set up and it only says mercenaries

I presume because the Secrets of the Atlas stuff is directly available in Standard leagues too ??

Secrets of the Atlas is the expansion. Meaning that all of the end game Atlas stuff is available in Standard as well.

Mercenaries of Trarthus is the new temporary league.

I thought Secrets of the Atlas was the new League and Mercenaries was the Challenge league

League = game mode.

So you are kind of right, as the 8 public old Standard permanent leagues will now have the Secrets of the Atlas features, while the 8 public new temporary challenge leagues will have the Mercenaries features (but the Secrets of the Atlas features too).

How can this be so confusing to players with a lot of badges that have been here for years? We've had several expansion launching alongside a league.

"War for the Atlas" launched alongside "Abyss league".
"Conquerors of the Atlas" launched alongside "Metamorph league".
"Echoes of the Atlas" came with "Ritual league".
"Siege of the Atlas" came with "Archnemesis league".

And now,

"Secrets of the Atlas" is launching alongside "Mercenaries of Trarthus" league.

I understand perfectly well that separating "Expansions" and "Challenge Leagues" is confusing for new players. But long-time players should probably know? Just to clarify:

Expansion: An end-game expansion to the game, designed to be a (semi-)permanent addition to the game for a long time, affects all game modes, including standard.

Challenge League: Designed to be temporary and does not affect standard.
