Can't unallocate a skill

Why can't I unallocate the passive in the red circle? I'm assuming it's cuz it supports the intelligence node next to it, but I can unallocate the other passives connected to that node.

Also, how to you straight up refund an attribute node? All I see is the option to change what it is.

Because the entirety of your tree has to be contiguous. Weapon set passives are not good enough for that condition, even if loops would technically make everything connected in Weapon Set 1 and Weapon Set 2.

Essence of the Storm, and the passive connected to its left, are allocated with Weapon Set 1 points.
I'm just confused by that tbh. So how do I see only what actual points are spent, and not weapon set points? I've tried going to weapon set 2 and adding the points to the Essence of the Storm branch so both set 1 and 2 have it, but then I still can't take the point out to the right of Flow State.

Also, when I switch to weapon set 2 passives, I see all skill points already set, and can spend even more.

EDIT: Okay, I went to refund NPC, refunded Essence of the Storm branch, confirmed, repurchased Essence of the Storm branch, confirmed, then I could refund that skill circle in post 1. I came out 1 skill point ahead which is what would have happened had I just been able to refund the node without doing these extra steps, so, like I said, a little confused if it wasn't a bug.

The red line going through the lightning nodes means it's on weapon set, meaning you'll have a non-contiguous tree if you swap weapons AND were to un-allocate the point you've circled.

K, that, makes some sense to me. idk how I accidentally spent weapon set points instead of regular points, now I know to look for a different color to know if that's happened. See my edit in last post if you haven't already, for more detail.

Weapon set points will still eat into your pool of "regular" passive tree points. They aren't just extra.

Sorry, I hadn't looked at the available passives part of the screenshot. I would've included more context if I'd realized those were the only two weapon set passives allocated.

Allocating weapon set passives still requires passive points.
You can either use a passive point by using it directly, or by instead allocating a weapon set 1 point and a weapon set 2 point--whichever you allocate first will require a regular passive point, while the next point you allocate for the other set won't.

When you swapped to allocating weapon set 2 passives, you could still allocate passives without spending extra regular passive points because you had no allocated set 2 passives and two allocated set 1 passives. When you removed the weapon set 1 passives, you were also refunded a regular passive point because you had no weapon set 2 passives allocated.
Is there a way to make sure it is set to spending passive points generally instead of it somehow being on a weapon set? Like I said now that I know I will pay more attention in the future, just want to make sure I have all the info.

After going in-game to check, I don't think I have ALL the info, but I think I know where the confusion came from. Normally I think you'd have to press the buttons next to the Weapon Set lines in the top right to allocate points for that weapon set. It's hard to do by accident, and adds a hard-to-miss banner to the top saying which Weapon Set you're allocating to.

However, sometimes modifier keys can be used in Path of Exile for different interaction behaviors. For example, Ctrl+Click to move an item to your stash, and Ctrl+Shift+Click to move an item to your stash while ignoring stash affinity--which is useful for moving unique flasks/charms into a Unique tab instead of the tab with Flask affinity.

Ctrl+Click can be used to allocate a passive point without having to confirm afterwards.

Shift+Click will allocate a Weapon Set 1 point instead of a regular passive point.
I couldn't find an equivilent for allocating a Weapon Set 2 point, though.

So, probably just take care in the future to not hold Shift while assigning passive points.
Yeah, I obviously did something wrong without realizing it. New game for me, barely touched PoE1 (think I played an hour when it first came out), I see a lot of similarities to Diablo II and sadly even Diablo III Inferno (one of my worst gaming experiences ever), but it is its own thing. Tons to learn. Thanks for the patience!
