Combat is not fair for melee builds
I know this is the age old problem in ARPGs, but this game is very close to getting melee right the problem is the amount of unfair mechanics you need to deal with as a melee build and the lack of visual clarity when too many mobs are on the screen.
The worst offenders are volatile plants and the on death effects of so many mobs that either explode, leave a trail that damages you or leaves projectiles that follow you and explode. As a ranged character you see all this coming and you can somewhat react. As a melee in many situations you can not even react to the onslaught of projectiles coming your way. Had high hopes for melee in PoE2. Sadly warrior still remains the most unloved class. All heil totem builds!

Melee is made drastically worse while playing in a group. All the overlapping visuals make it impossible to see what's going on, especially on the ground. While I do like the game, I haven't played for a few patches now because of it. Respecing into midrange isn't melee and shouldn't be the only solution. I am holding out hope they do something about it, even just adding transparency to the visuals would drastically improve melee in my opinion. Since this topic never gains much traction, I am slowly losing my hope though. It doesn't help that we're half way into the announced EA, and still only have access to 1/3 of the weapons and skills for Melee classes. Not that it matters, since if I can't see anything, I still wont be playing.

The supposed benefit of being in melee range (less distance to travel for avoiding cone effects) also isn't unique to melee builds. Ranged can stand in the exact same positions as melee.
Volatile plants have been improved but still punish maces more than others. They've pretty much gutted all the on death effects. My doryani build doesn't bother stepping out of the shock bomb death effects, would take 15 of them to kill me- but they still affect melee more than ranged. (Think the bleeding blood pools is only hazardous one now) "Beidat honored the pact, though Mancy wouldn't take off Doryani’s prototype."
