I wouldn't be overly concerned about the precise order of operations.

He needs to end up with a Path of Exile account linked with a Steam account; he needs to have used your key here on the website to have a valid Path of Exile II Early Access license; he needs to use the website to claim a Steam key which will add the game to his Steam library.

There aren't any traps where, if he goes about it in the wrong sequence, something will break and he'll need to ask Support to manually correct something for him.

Here's one order which would work and seems sensible, but it's not the only option;

• Register a Path of Exile account here on the website.

• Use your key to add the license to his account.

• Link his Path of Exile account to his Steam account.

• Claim the Path of Exile 2 Steam client key.

• Use the aforementioned key within Steam.

• Post a photo of any cute cats / dogs / other pets he might have.
