consolidate server architecture please

Today I was "disconnected from server" twice, once when attempting to enter my hideout from a map, with the error message "unable to connect to achievement server", and then "failed to connect to any instance", resulting in a disconnect and the loss of the map and everything I had gained in it (which when playing ruthless is not insignificant).

The fact that you have an extra "achievement server" to which one needs to connect and is a source of potential errors is pitiful considering the amount of disconnects and extraneous technical difficulties that have become inreasingly abundant.

Terrible idea; that would make stability worse, not better.

Not sure what you mean by "worse" -- my connection was much more stable 11 years ago playing on a laptop with a wireless wifi connection on a crappy DSL router pretty far away from any server. Now I live in Europe, literally next door to the Frankfurt server, on a fantastic fibre optics connection and cannot complete a map. I had better stability playing D2 on a dialup modem connection 30 years ago.

I was commenting on your suggestion in the OP, which appears to be totally unrelated to this post. Games these days have dedicated servers for e.g. chat functionality. Most games back in the day did, too. I really don't think you want that to change...
