Stoneclad gorilla wont upgrade to a higher uncut gem

Tamed a stoneglad gorilla and now it has a permanent red exclamation point next to the gem in the list. Doesn't seem to effect anything but it won't let me use a higher level uncut to increase it's level. My friend leveled his no problem. Anyone know why I can't level mine?
