Idea for SciFi ARPG
Got bored and thought of a game in the spirit of POE 1, but scifi.
Working name: Rust-Buckets The player's character is an AI core in the far future. On either a desolate planet or a ruined ringworld, you are pulled out of a trash heap at the start of the story. Instead of a preset character model, the player chooses an assortment of parts to customize their character at the end of a tutorial. Arms (left and right arms are different parts and can be specialized), movement parts [legs (bi/tri/quadrupedal), wheeled, tracked, hover or ball], chest/chassis that offer utility slots, armor types, and inventory slots and a head part that offers comms, targeting, RADAR and GPS. Weapons come in the form of machine guns, shotguns, rifles of different types (can be the dex class of weapons), Flame throwers, laser weaponry, melee weapons that would make sense on the limitations of the engine (moving while swindling and even running down enemies as a default attack), and an assortment of rockets/explosives. Arms may have small built-in weapons that can synergize with other weapons or abilities/skills or even provide a melee attack. After the player has assembled their Rust-Bucket, they will set out to protect and scavange for their new band of friends. Abilities/skills can either use Energy points and Action points or even both, depending on the type of ability being used. Certain parts cannot be used together unless one or both are modified so they can be used. Skills and abilities come in the form of chips that can be slotted in body parts ala POE 1, with the difference being the player can choose where and how the slots are connected (linked system). Cloaking systems and even a stealth mechanic- enemies have awareness and rely on line of sight to see you, will alert others if they see you, and even change their behaviors, such as forming a tight formation to deal with you. Rocket boosters to close in quickly with the enemy or even empower skills/abilities. Backpack for extra inventory in exchange for support options (think POE2's Titan's extra inventory perk, but you can remove it at will and it's not locked behind a class). Weapons and armor can be modular, so upgrades in the form of prefixes and suffixes come in the form of parts for your gear. For example, lets say you found a decent base gun you don't want to discard, you can find upgrade parts, such as a generic barrel or a barrel that adds extra volicity (higher damage/hit chance), that upgrade it and if you want to swap parts out, you can at will but the old parts will be destroyed. The same applies to the skill/ability sockets and links on the body parts, keeping the original POE spirit while giving the player a bit more control over their gear. What do you guys think? That might be interesting. But is there anything in game mechanics that makes it different from PoE?
For example, instead of linking skill gem and support gems (i'll use PoE terms here), you would have prefixes and suffixes on gem itself. Then, links between skill gems will make them interact with each other. For example, one skill hit enemy with a projectile. It then is used when a linked skill is used to grant it 100% hit chance against that enemy. I also must ask: what are action points for? They seems to be from any turn-baded games but not from arpg genre. |
