Item equipping issues with spirit

Currently, if I have any skills that utilize spirit (minions, auras) I can't use them in my item slot 1. Everything has to be equipped in item slot 2. If I have for instance, a sceptre in item slot 1, then my game doesn't register that there is spirit in that item slot and I can't use any summons. I have to equip everything in item slot 2.

Really weird and frustrating bug.
