Does overcapped resistance help against Penetration?
|
If a map mod has monster damage penetrates 25% of elemental resistances, does overcapped resistance help?
From my research I have not found anything conclusive for PoE2. I know they have changed penetration a little from PoE1 (i.e. cannot pen below 0% res). If overcapped resistances does not help - that map mod seems kind of insane. Playing hardcore atm - have some maps where I am a little hesitant to run. Thanks. Last bumped on Apr 12, 2026, 1:46:30 PM

The PoE 2 wiki is not yet up to date on penetration. But I would assume that it works like in PoE 1, with the exception that it cannot go below 0, what you have already mentioned.
https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Resistance_penetration So over capped resistances would not help. If you have 90% Fire resistance and your maximum fire resistance is 80%, 25% penetration would treat your fire resistance as 55%. |

overcapped resists only protect against things like "you have 40% less Resistances", and "Reduces player resistances by X" on map mods and curses. penetration treats your resists as your displayed capped resistances - penetration value, without any benefit from overcap.

" It is insane. Just throw those away if you care about exp. I'm currently trying to grind towards lvl 97, and I just put em in a stash tab to maybe use once I level up. |

25% penetration is a bit much, thats basically like 100% added damage, when our added damage mods are what 40%?
15% would be a much better number. |

does anyone know how it works (both in poe 1 and 2) if you have over 90% max res? sure, 90 is the maximum for EFFECTIVE mitigation, but you can have more than 90% max res inofficialy. you can see that if you equip a melding of the flesh, it reduces your max res but it wont go below 90 if you have enough.

" It's still 90%. Max res above 90% has no effect and isn't used in any mechanics. |

" I believe max "monsters penetrate elemental resistances" on waystones is 15%. The reason it is showing 25% on the map is probably having atlas passive nodes that increase waystone modifiers (15% x 1.667 = 25%). My point being, if its higher than 15% then you doing it to yourself! :D |
