Online play

I just started playing not too long now and convinced a friend to get the game so we could play together.
He bought the game and when we tried to play together on the same game it was really hard. Like almost unplayable with a new person.

My question is are the multipliers for group play (2 people) set correctly?
Seemed really difficult.
