Cluster grenades - weapon swap stops 2nd explosion from happening

Just realised I've wasted my time with this skill and setting up a weapon swap and passive tree swap. If you use the skill and then weapon swap before the grendaes explode the first time, they don't explode the second time so they do no damage and are useless.
