linking xbox account problem

When I go to link my microsoft xbox account it says I am currently linked to another account! If I try to link the account it says I will merge the account i am logged into. Will I lose all my xbox progress and have to start over? it says it is permament and I cannot merge anymore on this account. 1 account must be from Poe1 which I played for about 20 minutes when it first came out and I guess I created a new account when Poe2 came out so does merging accounts lose progress? thankyou
