Ultimatum is bad
I have done some recent testing in ultimatum and I have to come to the conclusion that it is simply bad and should feel bad.
I will explain. I have stated before that the bugginess of ultimatum is bad and that the penalties are too harsh. I will state this again except that the penalties are too harsh. You can only choose from 3 choices. You gain literally nothing for the choices. You can gain no boons, no benefits not help, no recovery, nothing from the choices. There is no upside to them. Let us do some thinking. There is 10 trials and you get to debuff yourself before you even get to start Ultimatum. That means you get 10 chances to die, die, or die. Let us go over them -15% resistance AND -10% max res. average 25% damage taken+10% = enemies hit for 40~% more damage a hit. Reduce defenses by 40% 5k ES? no 3k. Armor capable of barely shrugging off greys? Not anymore. Used to be able to dodge? Nope. Effectively +50% more damage taken or effectively you can take 50% less damage. This is only two debuffs and level 1 of the debuff. 40% more damage taken. 50% less protection hit 50% more often (because of the way the formula works) 40% now = 80% more damage taken. You are nearly taking double damage and you are only at level 2. Lets add to that.... Bosses do more damage but take less damage. Wonderful. So what used to take multiple strikes now not only could 1 shot you if even hit with a glancing blow but now takes twice as much to kill them? Wonderful. Enemies get 40% more resistances. So you are saying 50% less damage for anyone doing elemental damage? Wonderful. You are at level 4 and now get to fight your first boss who can now 1 shot you, takes an absurd amount of time to kill, and can go invulnerable for 30+ seconds while covering the map with AOE damage that is nearly impossible to dodge. Forget ES recharge because you will be hit far far far far far far far too often. Lets suppose you beat this one. Suppose being a strong word I wouldn't use in this case but lets hypothetically imagine a perfect player that managed to 1 shot the boss because he has infinite damage and infinite regen and infinite life. Essentially a dev. Level 5 - You get a bubble that forces you to stand in place less be stunned. You can run out of it before it starts but lets face it, you have to cast sometime so goodluck! You are now trapped in this bubble. Surely while in it you can dodge... Only no the bubble is about as wide as 3 characters and you best get lucky because you can be 1-shot by half the monsters in the game now. 6 - You get a bubble that is even smaller and if you leave it, not only are you stunned but you are vulnerable. Awesome. Hope that upcoming boss doesn't like.. do stuff, would certainly suck if THAT went off at any time at all ever. 7 - Boss incoming so lets give you a good one. Monster hits always inflict poison and bleed. Poison AND bleed. Two effects that ignore ES. Hope you have alot of HP. Certainly wouldn't want you to miss those tons of HP nodes on the tree. That would just be cruel. Wouldn't it? :) Supposedly you don't get tornado god who can go invulnerable for 30s, then fly into the air for 10s then land on top of you right afterwards, followed by massive aoe that you MUST now dodge or die, then fly into the air again, followed by area denial of half the map, followed by tornado, repeat. You pass! congrats. 8 - When enemies die they spawn a TIMERLESS SUPER FAST BALL OF DEATH. Yeah this certainly won't go over poorly. They can only do about 3k damage WITH defenses when fired from a grey. No reason to worry about those. Not like you are mandated to kill the entire map in one shot or be one shot followed by 300 balls of death chasing you down that each explode consecutively and not simultaneously that are all faster then you and explode fast enough they force you do dodgeroll leaving you vulnerable for the follow up explosion as you slow-stand up in an attempt to dodge it. No that would be too easy if you could dodge them. But wait! there is more. You have to put soul cores into place. That take 5 seconds to place.. Hope nothing tries to hit you during this time. That would just be unsportsmanlike. Wouldn't want to make a game that did all this at the same time right? You are only at level 8. 9. You lose 75% defenses, or you can be hit and take grasping vines. Surely this wouldn't spell death for you allowing all the monsters, explosives, damage buffs, and more make it near impossible for you to dodge. Certainly not! 10 - You lose even more defenses. or you can have turrets that fire from all sides of the map in all direction that do plenty of damage buffed by your low res and vulnerability state that you must take because standing still isn't an option. Or you can have rotating lasers that fire near constantly and area-deny the vast majority of the map or you can give the enemies 20% chaos damage because no reason that would back-fire Or you can make rares spawn MORE often and have extra modifiers making them even more deadly or or Or Or. There is a pattern here and it isn't pretty. And at the end of the day you get the best prize of all. You beat it all You won. You defeated all the monsters and now you get your... Corrupted loot that all has T1 rolls and are all actually weapons and not even rares, special in any way, unmodifiable, and only good for selling to a vendor. Not like you had to drop stuff along the way because your inventory is full. Or like there is a stash at the end that would allow you to at least pick it all up. Nope. You get a bunch of useless stuff that you didn't want. and maybe.. If you are really really lucky You can ascend your final time. Woopdy doo. Lets make these useless things drop like flies from maps and clutter up the loot pool as bad as uncut skill gems. Not like there is anything else you would rather drop. like a grey. Ultimatum is bad, and it should feel bad. The negatives are harsher and harsher then they have any right to be and its ridiculous. Nothing you do can make this easier and you are given meager returns for what amounts to consecutive deaths at the hands of stupid and poorly thought out stacking mechanics. Would have made more sense if half these things were simply eliminated. If a map dropped with even 2 of these modifiers people would just not run that map. You have managed to not only make it mandatory in a sense, but also make it painstakingly hard to complete as the negatives compound without any reason. Be one thing if you rolled a +res on a phys build and was allowed to push that to its conclusion to take 1 of 2 other bonus debuffs but no, the roll is completely random and completely terrible. -40% defenses cuts you survivability by a ton. Stack that twice and you are basically dead. -10% res is bad in maps. -20% is just down right cruel. Last bumped on Jan 1, 2025, 6:27:10 PM
