Annoyingly lost a lot of loot after killing Rathbreaker

Immediately after killing Rathbreaker, I was swarmed and killed. No problem there, it was a fair death. But as I died about 2 seconds after the death of the boss, I hadn't had a chance to pick up any of the loot that it or its adds had dropped. After dying and coming back to that checkpoint I was a bit disappointed to see nothing anywhere but empty ground. Are we SUPPOSED to lose any loot on screen every time we die?
