Zone Sizing: Please Cut it in Half
There is just no way that the game was 'play-tested' in this state and everyone said "yeah, that seemed about right." The zones should all be cut in half and maybe more for a few of them, less for others where it makes sense. The pacing is just terrible especially from mid-Act2 to late in Act 3.
Just picked back up on a character I abandoned in the campaign. (Level 25-ish Merc in Act 2 Normal) It was taking way too long to get through the campaign so I re-rolled a Monk. I wanted to see how the campaign felt after running maps on a decently geared character. After killing the Viper chick in Utzaal, I was just begging for an actual waypoint(a break) but the game throws a tiny mob at you then leads you to a fork. Left goes to a sizable area but nothing worth exploring and to the right a quick checkpoint followed immediately by the zone exit. I took the left first of course and it just felt miserable- I can imagine a less enthusiastic/dedicated player quitting the game here. It just goes on and on with out a definitive break in the action. (Yes, I know I can pause but this is ridiculous. It just one marathon zone after another.) What I expected was for the game to have a pace and zone size that makes sense for leveling a new character and the right size to tell the story. But it feels like each zone was just maximized to keep the player in the campaign longer or b/c switching zones too often is hard on the game's servers etc.. So, for example- a zone might be long enough to get a character from one level to the next or a set of zones might be about the right length to lead you to a notable passive.. all while making sense with the overall narrative/lore. Please cut the zones in half- then make the epic zones a bit larger and make the zones where less is going on story-wise even smaller. There is no need to make each zone as large as possible- it gets old quick. The maps/waystones can be much larger and vary even more b/c the player has an established build by then. In those areas the devs can crank up the size to 300% if they feel the need. But for a campaign this long with zones this size: I definitely will not return every league to level and play even one build unless the league mechanic is miraculous.
