No spirit - killed the boss

I killed king of the mists, checked the web, didn't find any solution.

You receive an item which when right-clicked it grants you the 30 spirit, and then it converts to a spirit gem that you can cut.
I believe this was the order of things. |

Yeah, that's what I figured from the web. However, got the gem, and can't use it because I have no spirit. The chicken and th egg lol
