Need help understanding gems..skill gems I-VII disappeared

I got an uncut skill gem level 7 and when I use it I suddenly can't choose skills 1-7, I only see 9-13. And there is a message about 30 spirit required (Not even sure what is spirit yet). Is there a limit to how many uncut skill gems I can use or how does this work?
