Beat Trial Boss But Still Failed Due to Honour Mechanic

I tried to find a thread on this, but came up empty. I completed the first trial for my first ascendancy points. I had 80-ish honour right after beating the boss and a fire projectile hit me, causing me to fail the trial. Is this intended? It feels very weird something like this can happen. Dying right after beating the boss is something I can understand, but I went from 80-ish honour to 0 from a random projectile immediately after beating the boss... I'm not against the honour mechanic or anything (so far), I just feels weird that I completed the trial but also didn't.
