The slot machine addiction effect is not there

In most ways PoE2 is superior to PoE1. I think all the various game systems and mechanics are better, the boss fights are much, much better (HP pools aside), the combat is better, etc.

However I still find PoE1 much more "fun"

The main reason is PoE1 has the slot machine effect, PoE2 doesn't.

They have done extensive studies as to why slot machines are addictive and they have discovered it's about finding the perfect payout rate.

If the machine never pays off, people will get frustrated and not have any fun and stop playing.

If the machine pays off too frequently, people get desensitized to winning and the excitement of winning goes away and people get bored.

Where the slot machine is the most addictive/fun is when payouts are infrequent enough to be very exciting, but frequent enough that there is thrill in the chase knowing it could legitimately be just around he corner.

This is where PoE2 falls short. The slot machine never pays off. I play for 2-3 hour sessions and in most of them nothing every drops. I can play 2-3 hours and maybe note even see a rare or a good currency item. Finding a rare chest and having it drop complete junk every time is unspeakably demoralizing.

A pile of useless blue and white drops for 3- hours is demoralizing, like a slot machine that's set to never pay, people will lose interest.

Damn, I hate not being addicted to things.
This exact attitude is why POE 1 turned out in that speed loot piñata mess.

People with addictive personalities should seriously seek help. Stop ruining games for the rest of us.

Addictive personality he says. You have like what 50 supporter packs? You probably have many thousands upon thousands of hours in PoE1 at this point.

When it comes to a game, you want people to find it fun and keep playing. That's a good thing.

PoE2 is shaping up to be a game people play through once and put aside because it doesn't have the hook that most ARPG's have.

They don't have to crank up the drop rates to PoE1 levels, where you're constantly being showered with drops every minute, that's actually a bit too far in the other direction. Too many drops is numbing.

I actually enjoy the slower pace of PoE2's gameplay and combat but the extreme scarcity of dropgs make it feel like a bit of a slog.
OP, I think you personally are desensitised. And I don't know what you are doing ingame if you claim to be playing for 3 hours straight and not finding any rare.

5000 hours in 10 years is basically nothing. Also, playing to de-stress is not the same as following the dopamine rush. Dopamine is involved, but not to the detriment of everything else.
