How difficult is proximity targeting for console?

Why am I aiming at an enemy halfway across the map while I'm on console. Please explain why that happens. I don't understand why it isnt proximity to my character because I'd really like to hit what's on top of me first.

Yes, it's that bad. Controller can target enemies only half screen range.

And it's very hard to use Pain Offering. I know that I have to aim my minions, I know its mechanics, but most of the time I press the buttons but nothing happens and it already consumes Mana.
