Killed Wolf, died at the same time. Could not pick up gear dropped

Not sure if it is supposed to be possible or not. I was fighting the Wolf in the Manor. I killed the wolf but at the same time died. Wolf dropped gear but I could not pickup since I was dead. Hooded one came through the portal and story continued. I spawned at checkpoint but gear was gone. If trading death is supposed to happen, please ignore. Thanks
