Getting auto-muted because of things said in a whisper chat is a bit Orwellian 1984...
Context:
Last night (I'm aussie), someone started spamming global chat with "offers" of help, for a cost of 1ex or 1regal per "help". I questioned this player's greed, and another player told them to stop spamming (they had been spamming their offers of help prior to me logging in). The other player then whispered me and told me he had been auto-muted for telling the player to stop spamming. The player then said he'd likely message support, and I jokingly gave him some things to say in relation to his reasons for being muted. These things I obviously won't repeat here, but they weren't threatening, and certainly weren't anything of concern. They did involve immature insults aimed at the player that spammed the "offers" of assistance, but that was it. *I* was then muted for 10 minutes, and the reason I was given was a breach of code of conduct based on what I had said in the whisper chat. Is this what we've come to now? I understand why the code of conduct exists, but now you're policing whisper chats between players who were just blowing off steam about another player with questionable ethics? I know some of you will say "There's more to it than this" but I assure you, there's not. In fact, I put it out to any mod/GM reading this to trawl back through my chat history, find out why I was muted, and show everyone - so they can be aware of what kinds of things can get them in trouble. Tl;dr - be careful of what you say - even in whisper chat. That too is policed. Last edited by TornadoPunch#6355 on Dec 13, 2024, 8:35:09 PM Last bumped on Dec 14, 2024, 11:30:24 PM

Not sure what you want to hear, but it should be pretty obvious that chat gets monitored. You don't get to be racist or whatever in whispers and think nothing will happen. And that's actually a good thing, because that's how hateful groups gather.

Of course you can get muted for things you say in whispers. Where do you think a bulk of targeted player harassment is going to be?
Second, how do you know you where automuted? Perhaps the person you where talking to was offended and reported it? Maybe you said something that hit them wrong, or maybe they just miss-read it, and assumed your statements where at them, and not the spamming third party. Perhaps it was a long con, and the person you where whispering was in fact, friends with the spammer and they just wanted to troll people by trying to trap them into aggressive whispers to ban people for kicks. Third, "Orwellian 1984" is like saying ATM Machine. But, how now do I realize I need to update that saying. I can't remember the last time I saw an ATM... Perhaps a DM Message..? " Fair call. I can assure you it wasn't racist etc, and nothing of the kind. I'm not that kind of person, but I do make immature jokes. |
|
It didn't occur to me that they could have been a friend of the person and trolling etc. They claimed they never even got the whisper that got me in trouble, so I just assumed it was blocked.
Either way, lesson learnt by me. |

" Didn't say you were, just emphasising why it can also be a good thing. DM privacy varies from service to service and is usually protected in IRL services, but it's in-game chat. You agreed to the terms when you made the account. Gaming PC: Win 11, 7600X3D, RTX 4080, 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30, 7000 MB/s SSD, 850W, 3840x2160p 120Hz
