lost loot when we both die?

Is this normal in Path of Exile 2? I'm new to the game. I just spend a pile of time beating balbala, just to have them die to my curse after I died. When I spawned at the check point and went back the coin and a uncut skill gem was on the ground but the rest of the loot was gone.
