Does this game have a persistent gamespace?

Does this game have a persistent gamespace? What I mean is, does it have something like Diablo's "Eternal" realm? Am I literally forced to start over every few months regardless?

Yes it does have a persistent standard league and no you're not forced to start over.
Bear in mind however that any and all balance/item changes applied in leagues will trickle down to standard, making most of your builds obsolete over time.
Thank you. That's what I needed to know. Direct and to the point, to boot.

but what about older gear? in standard the older items don't really get updated to the new versions unless you use a divine orb on it.

it was just the skill gems that were always changed retroactively. i don't think much of the gear ever really got touched after any changes, other than maybe the headhunter a few years ago if i can remember. the legacy items would always remain.

i would only assume it would be more or less the same in poe2. and they would be bringing certain league content into standard as well whenever there's an expansion. but i do know that early access characters will be in a seperate realm once the full game releases and they won't be really doing much of anything at all with that.

poe1s eternal realm aka "standard league" has been a lot more functional and playable long term than the eternal realms in D3 and D4. it is almost certainly going to be the same in poe2.

theres many people who almost exclusively play the eternal realm in poe1, the majority of the times i log in and play its in the eternal realm because i have my old characters there ready to go and i can pick right up where i left off 8 months ago on them.

i have characters there i created in 2013 and im still playing them, upgrading their gear, getting xp.

its the same thing in diablo games tho. i have legacy gear in the eternal realms in diablo 3 and 4, but there isnt even divine orbs over there to update them theyre just stuck with old outdated mods forever. the mods in path of exile rarely became as completely useless as the outdated mods on diablos gear were.

thats always going to be the way in an evolving game tho, im certain it will be the same in poe2. i think its mostly a good thing, if you want to play a character long term then you want to keep being able to upgrade bits of the gear, thats part of the game loop you keep playing for.
The amount of projection going on these forums is mind boggling to me. Nowhere did I state that it was a good/bad thing, I simply stated how things were.

Every single of my builds on standard is unusable and that's a fact. In order to make them work I'd need to go back to the drawing board. Claiming otherwise is misleading to new players, period.

expecting a live service game to be in the same state you left it however long ago is delusional....

ive been playing the same characters in standard for 10+ years in many instances and very few times have any of them been completely broken.

you get a full passive tree respec every 3 months, you just plug in your passives, 95% of the time you can put in 95% of the same passives, maybe switch a couple of gems, maybe switch 1 piece of gear and your character is fully operational again in the new game state.

essence drain was added to the game in 2015, in talisman league where it was launched i made a ci essence drain witch. she is still a ci essence drain witch in standard i still play her. shes 9 years old her passive tree has changed, ascendancies were added, her gear has been upgraded many times.

i found this shield and boots in open beta. made a ci + armour based block witch to use them, chapterhouse, crafted this chest to go with the shield

i still play that character, it is still wearing those 3 items from 2013, its still a ci armour block witch. its lvl98, 5 years from now maybe it will be lvl100 and ill finally stop playing it.

if you want to keep playing your characters you can keep playing them, if you care to spend 5-15 minutes updating them each cycle. none of my 2012 diablo 3 characters are playable in the eternal realm there either, and for those i would need to completely change all their gear and skills, essentially make them an entire new character for them to work.
Posting a couple of generic builds that somewhat work after modifications does nothing to counter the point, which is that most (yes I used that word for a purpose) builds will become obsolete/unusable without major modifications.

Again, nowhere did I argue that diablo handled eternal characters better, or worse, I was simply stating facts, which then get projected onto by people like you for the sake of argument I guess, because you're not changing any minds here.
