What happened to Recombinators?

I have tried to combine several pairs of rings, each pair had:

- one ring with one prefix, no suffix, rare
- one ring with one suffix, no prefix, rare

These were created with alts/regals/orbs of annullment.
In each craft, I added some benchcrafts (named ones) to increase the odds of getting a 2 affix item.

- What happened was that most of the time, my item resulted in a magic item, one affix, essentially a bricked item.
- In two cases, I got a magic item with two affixes (the prefix from the one ring, and the suffix from the other ring). Almost what I wanted, except for the rarity of the item.
- The rarity was every single time downgraded into magic. And I did like 9 of these crafts.
- What I wanted of course was a rare ring with one prefix and one suffix.

How can this be? Was this intentional? The suffix I used was created by an essence (crit multi), maybe that was the reason? Ring was Vermillion ring.
From my understanding and from what I have read, the rarity of the item is determined by the two inputs. So the outcome should never have been magic to begin with?

I spent a decent amount of currency to make these 1 affix, rare rings.
Seriously, I hate these things about poe. There is no proper documentation how the recominator really works. All is speculation, and you lose so much currency trying out stuff every time..

1 prefix and 1 suffix = magic item. The only way youre gonna have a rare 2 affix item is if you get 2 prefixs or 2 suffixs.

In general you have a 50% chance to fix the rarity per:
1. Regal.
2. Block suffix/prefix - whichever.
3. Annul. Repeat 2 if needed.

Probably. If its an exclusive mod (it likely is) then then this is fatal for the method you used.

For recomb result it will be rare exactly if it has 2+ prefixes or 2+ suffixes.

While I agree in principle (including Recombinators) there is some documentation which explains some parts:

Thanks for your comments.

Well the only thing I am wondering is how rarity matters exactly for recombining.

Lets say I have used alts and recomb to make a good ring with t1 prefix and t1 sufix. This ring is magic. Can I use this ring in the recombiantor with a rare ring, or does that decrease my chances to get a final item that is rare (and not magic)?

Far as I know: Only the summary prefixes and suffixes matter for the outcome. Rarity of the input items does not matter. (With one possible exception regarding the odds to get an item with 0 affixes as outcome. This however is likely irrelevant anyway in your case.)

So simple answer: Yes, you can use the magic ring.

Alright thanks.
