Noob Gem link question

So if a weapon or an item has connected or linked sockets, let's say a wand with 3 linked sockets, if I put the main skill gem on the top and then 2 support gems below, being the 3rd one connected on the middle support gem, will both support gems still give support to the main skill gem placed on top or only the middle socket connected to it?

I guess this question also goes with more socketed items, if there are 6 sockets linked together, if I have two main skill gems on them and 4 of them are support gems, will all of them still support the main skill gems even if not all of them are not directly connected to it?

The position of gems are arbitrary assuming they are all linked.

To answer the second paragraph of your question, assuming both main skills are able to be supported by the support gems, yes even if they are not adjacent they will support the skill gems.
