Drop it in a map?
Vendor it?
Drop it in your HO?
Is it in your guild?
Did you accidently hit X and hide it?

Gear filled with gems usually gets a "do you want to do this?" second click.

Did you leave it somewhere in your stash in one of the various NPC mod boxes?

check all these places:

crafting bench and other crafting tables
all special stashes, like essence or fossil
Unique stash tab

The amount of times I accidentally placed an item in the middle square of a stash tab accidentally....

Yeah, look around for it, may be somewhere.
