Forgot how good Torchlight 2 was for its time

Sad that we will probably never get a true modern faithful remake or expansion of it. No, I do not consider TL3 or T:! to be Torchlight. Being able to gib your enemies in an arpg is the best :)

TL3 died because the devs wanted to chase trends instead of making a proper TL3 game.

IMHO i actually like the class system of TL3. You had a base hero with some unique abilities, then you could "build your own class" via the artifacts/skill trees"

i cannot consider TLI as a spiritual successor to TL1+2.

tho i would say TLI is POE2 lite set in TL's settings.

its a shame people hate TLI for
1. artstyle
2. P2W (still within my tolerance level tbh)
3. "not being a proper TL game"

if people look past that. its really quite solid with a huge ton of things to do

EDIT: in my effort to put TLI on a pedestal i forgot what i was gonna say.

I too miss the old TL2. i love the concept of having items be restricted by stats. its satisfying running a twink with OP gear thats 10-20 levels above their actual level.

that said theres only a few things that i dislike about TL2. the first being the class specific trees.

coming from poe/gd/tli, i really love customizing my own character and the ability to use "anything".

one major gripe i have about tl2 is that life leech is restricted to an armorset that is only available to the melee hero IIRC.

despite there being 1001 mods available i hate the idea of installing mods to "fix a game".

Its not.

Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is way better.

I really hope you are joking. TL2 was a great game while VH was mediocre at best.

come on guys. opinions are subjective.

in fact i kinda like TLI. i consider TLI as POE Lite.

i might even have been playing TLI if i wasnt so invested in settlers.

From what i remember TL2 has their own version of endgame maps around the same time/slightly before PoE implemented them as an endgame feature.
Masterpiece of 3.16 lore
"A mysterious figure appears out of nowhere, trying to escape from something you can't see. She hands you a rusty-looking device called the Blood Crucible and urges you to implant it into your body."

Only usable with Ethanol Flasks

i somehow feel thats correct. one of the things i loved about TL is that you could equip any gear as long as you had the right stats.

but then theres item sets that were class bound. i HATED that.

VH was FUN. Still IS fun. Torchlight at first contact seems very fun but then in time game loos something. I stopped caring about story, i didnt care about anything. It becomes meh at best.

VH has a lot of dialogues and lore bits also game is having fun with modern cultural forms in ways other seems to lack.

when you bring that up, i would say thats absolutely correct. but i would say this is all thanks to the games choice of forcing you to play a character. you play VH. you're not some random mage/fighter/theif etc. you ARE VH.

that allows the devs to give VH more character, more story, cutscenes that make you feel more engaged.

it definitely is not too fair to put VH on the same level as other ARPGs as the direction is slightly different. it definitely is unique.

its a shame that VH has faded into the background now. no new sequels etc. its hard to improve on something thats already good as is.

if we compare it with other arpgs i would say other arpgs turn the dial up higher on the game system and neglect story/character development, whereas VH did the opposite but while keeping the system still simple yet engaging enough.

but really. i wouldnt mind if a new VH game came out. would have heavy competition against behemoths like poe tho.
