Only if you were playing when the ISP shut down and you were unlucky enough that before the game logged you out you were killed.
Otherwise your account might be compromised and someone killed your character.

I had to quit PoE for nearly 2 years because it was unplayable on my prior ISP.

Few years ago my ISP was max 99ms latency, now spike to 10k very often and min is 150ms latency. I know they are poorly working on the service, and sooner or later it will be impossible for me to actual loggin. Man I love this country

Most online games have some sort of process before your character is logged out.

When you DC the game will take about 6 seconds to realize that then go to save data before finishing logging you out, during that time on the server your character is just standing still, and if in a map that means you can be attacked.
