If you start a new char in Affliction it will go to standard in a few weeks anyway. In Affliction you can experience the league mechanic.
Starting with nothing the 1st char took always longer than the next ones ...

Conclusion:
There isn't a big difference.
And you are a beginner, so PoE is overwhelming for weeks in every league.

This league is expensive, though so is standard. The difference is that in league you will actually get currency drops, where in standard without MF, it takes a long time.

To put it in perspective, I got 2 magebloods, 2 hinekora's locks, 30 divines and at least 20 divines of drops from a single map yesterday. That's a year's worth of loot for me in standard, from a single map in league. 1 map. Admittedly it was a 300% quant, 12k wisps map using full MF, but that is just not possible in standard.

Additionally, there's just no population in standard.

I am happy to give you 10 divine and as many levelling pieces as you want. Nobody should miss out on what this league brings.

I quickly quit both harvest league and affliction league before I got too used to the insanity and I highly highly recommend people playing Affliction to take a step back and detox themselves by either playing some standard or ruthless (or other games xD). That way the next league won't be such a let-down :)
