Animate Weapon not working with a controller?

I've been playing PoE on PC with an Xbox controller for a while now (thank you for adding that!). Most of the time it works great, but I recently picked up a skill gem for "Vaal Animate Weapon".

No matter what I do, I can't get the (regular) version of the skill to do anything. I can see its casting animation, my mana goes down, but nothing gets summoned. but I've tried it on multiple items on the ground, all identified, of different rarities... nothing happens. My character just casts it but nothing is ever animated.

I see that there is also an "Alt Behavior" checkbox I can turn on in the controller skill bindings, but that just makes it not do anything at all... I can't even cast it then.

Is this a potential bug? Or am I just doing it wrong? :)
