Getting stuck in controller mode with some input devices

Essentially: It is entirely possible to change input mode to controller using only mouse and keyboard as long as there is some input device that appears as a controller connected to your pc, but you cannot change back from controller to mouse and keyboard inputs without that device having specific buttons. Not all devices that appear as a controller to a pc will have those buttons, and in that case you can find yourself in the situation I am currently in where I am unable to exit controller mode at all.

A quick fix here would be to allow the escape key to open the options menu.

In the longer term, it would be greatly appreciated if input mode could be customized at a finer level than a simple binary switch for controller vs keyboard, for example a setting to allow analog stick inputs for character movement while still using mouse cursor to aim.

Edit: Just mentioning that I did get unstuck at least, I had to write up a bit of software to spoof controller inputs from keyboard to get menu open and from there I could get back to main menu and change setting.
