EDC Trickster Confusion

Hey Folks,
this is my first league as a trickster and i decided to play a essence drain contagion build.

I followed this guide from Zizarian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkojdXrt0ZU&t=744s

In the guide he is talking about a hybrid version, which does more damage, but is less tanky then the es Version. But in his pob guide is only the endgame gear explained. Also all guides on youtube use the energy shield version.

Is the es survivability superior to the hybrid damage?
And is hybrid only recommended for low budget?

I farmed quite a lot of currency and want to buy nice gear now, would you recommend es?
