Does not ascending have it's own prize pool also? or do you have to ascend to be in the running.

It is all based on Character level. (so no, and no to your two questions)

Ya, I know it's by level...was just curious if no ascendancy counted also. So far in the running for 2 alts and 3 regs on XB.
