It seems that virtue gems come from the moon, lots of hints inside
Some cards and uniques are giving hints. The Lover card says:
I wanted to give you three things. I've given you my eternal love. I've sung to you my most beautiful song. I'd have given you the moon last, but it couldn't be found. I hope you'll accept this instead. ![]() It is the scene that Daresso gave Merveil the Star of Wraeclast, which made of virtue gem and later corrupted her. It indicated the connection between moon and gem. On Moonsorrow wand it says: Cast into darkness And trapped for a thousand years, The lonely moon weeps On the card The Lunaris Priestess, which dropped at lunaris temple, it is says: Embrace the Light, Await the Morrow, No more Spite, And no more Sorrow. ![]() The scene is a lunaris priestess holding a moon, which fires projectiles in a nova. The cards can be redeemed to Sire of Shards, which says: That which was broken may yet break. ![]() the staff looks like a moon with some tears like projectiles around it. And there is a Splinter of the Moon wand from Descent Champions race league, it says: Into darkness, horror, madness... So goes the descent. Also considering of vaal people calling virtue gems tears of Maji, it is very possible that Maji means the moon and tears of maji means splinters or shards of the moon, which are actually crystals. If this is true, then it seems that the moon exploded like a nova thousand of years ago for some reason. The moon crystals dropped on Wraeclast and caused chaos and corruption. On the card Lingering Remnants, which redeems vaal temple map, it says: Never dying, yet not living, Endlessly they wander beneath the harvest moon. ![]() The scene is vaal people sacrificing human lifes under the blood moon. Vaal poeple knew the origins of gems, thus sacrifced human to the moon. Last bumped on Feb 11, 2025, 7:48:52 PM

Just throwing my 2 cents,
Solaris and Lunaris are probably latin words, it is related to the words "soleil" and "lune" in french wich means sun and moon. Lunaris refers to the moon. The latin connexion is not as obvious in english, but maybe it was still easy to guess? https://www.google.fr/search?q=lunaris+latin&oq=lunaris+latin&aqs=chrome..69i57.2967j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=lunaris+to+english Last edited by EnafAequi#0569 on Feb 14, 2017, 12:10:23 AM

1) Moonsorrow is a reference to a cartoon, so not really sure if that's evidence of anything.
2) Lunaris priestess card references the moon and that's about it, which is a little weak on the evidence side because the moon is a very common symbol of mystery/solitude/power in any fantasy game. 3) Sire of shards' flavor text seems to be a simple reference to what the staff does, doesn't seem like any evidence to me. 4) Idk about splinter of the moon for the same reason as (2). 5) Maji = moon seems like a pretty big logical jump to me...only similarity is starting letter. Any further explanations on any of these points? Not saying you're wrong, I just need a little more convincing. |

Personnally, he convince me,
the Lunaris temple is explicitly the moon temple by latin translation, why? because it's where they experimented with virtue gems? it's pretty good theory. |

the lover card maker ckilgannon just told me the the text comes from Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, so has nothing to do with this theory.
im considering this again, the gem crystals may not come from the moon, but from volcano eruption. The harvest moon might trigger the eruption. The cataclysm at the end of vaal and eternal empire look the same, all about dark clouds thing, that would be the eruption. There is also a huge volcano island on the northern Wraeclast. this seems more scientific anyway. Last edited by str9004#4735 on Feb 14, 2017, 12:24:33 AM

" lunar is fairly common even in english I think, people talk about lunar cycles, lunar eclipse, lunar lander, even lunatic has some kind of moon connection I believe? Same with solar, solar winds, solar panels, solar power etc. I might have just made this up, but was there some kind of lore about them mining the virtue gems from the mountain, presumably the one we descend into to fight the beast? I totally could have just made that up out of nowhere, I dunno where its coming from but theres some vague sense of it in my head. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

Quote from some stuff written by malachai to maligaro in the chamber of sins: "Remember, those gems are phantasms in crystalline form. Alive [...]." My thory would be that the beast more or less absorbs the spirits or souls of everything that dies in wraeclast and somehow crystallises it. Some of those gems can be used, some others are far too corrupted for that (the violet chrystals that apparenly cover the whole beast). Just my theory.
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.

I had thought the gems were mined?

They can be mined and still originally come from the moon, like from thousands-ish+ years ago, one does not contradict the other. But yeah obviously the moon thing is huge stretch, but why not? It's as good as any other suggestion.
What is sure is that the moon thematic is inexplicably here on several occurences. Last edited by EnafAequi#0569 on Feb 14, 2017, 1:21:56 AM

the backround story of poe changes from time to time, at least in the parts that not playable story :(
the orgin of gems is the beast. the beast has a incredible big mind and dreams a dream that is fueled by this mind an such a way that the beasts dream becomes a second reality. the world and the beasts dream grinding on each other like tectonic plates and the gems comes out as diamonds of reality pressure. "don't worry GGG, it's ok!"
